Whisky Cask Insurance & Storage: What Every Investor Should Know

It is a fair first question from any new cask buyer: where is the cask, what protects it, and what happens if something goes wrong?

All UK whisky casks are stored in HMRC-regulated bonded warehouses. These sites are licensed, inspected and held to strict standards on safety, security and environmental control. They are also the legal home of the asset for as long as it remains in bond.

Bonded storage carries a financial benefit too: while the cask is in bond, no excise duty is payable. Duty is only triggered at bottling or removal, which means the cost stays deferred for the entire holding period.

Insurance is part of the package with any reputable storage provider. Cover includes fire, flood, theft and accidental damage. We make sure every client cask is fully insured from the date of purchase.

Each cask carries its own unique cask number, and its location in the warehouse is logged. Owners receive a certificate of ownership and, in most cases, can arrange a visit to see the cask in person if they want to.

Annual storage and insurance costs are usually £100 to £200 per cask, which is one of the lowest ongoing cost bases of any tangible alternative asset class.
