Gold Coin Investment
With Recognised Provenance
Physical gold has occupied a distinctive place in private wealth for generations.
It is tangible, internationally recognised and independent of the performance of any single company or financial institution.
Steadman-Chase specialises in selected British gold coins, including Britannias and Sovereigns, with particular emphasis on high-grade coins independently certified by NGC or PCGS.
This gives clients direct ownership of identifiable physical gold while adding another dimension beyond bullion alone: denomination, year, design, scarcity, condition and independently verified grade.
Physical Gold Coins
Why Invest in Gold Coins
Gold is often considered when investors want to introduce an asset whose characteristics differ from equities, bonds, cash and property.
Unlike shares, physical gold does not depend upon the profitability of a company. Unlike a bond, its value is not dependent on an issuer continuing to meet its obligations.
It is simply an asset that can be held directly.
Its price will still rise and fall, sometimes substantially, but gold has an established international market and continues to be held by private investors, institutions and central banks around the world.
Physical coins add portability and individual ownership to that proposition.

Why Britannias
& Sovereigns?
British Britannia and Sovereign coins combine investment interest with one particularly useful characteristic for UK investors: their status as sterling legal tender.
Britannia gold coins and Sovereigns minted from 1837 onwards are exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax.
That can make them particularly attractive to UK investors building larger physical gold holdings, although individual tax circumstances should always be considered separately.
Qualifying investment gold can also be exempt from VAT.
The result is a way of owning physical gold that can be highly tax-efficient while retaining direct ownership of the underlying asset.
More Than the
Underlying Gold Price

Not every gold coin should be valued in exactly the same way.
A standard bullion coin will generally trade primarily according to the amount of gold it contains and the prevailing gold price, plus the dealer’s premium.
Selected graded coins can have an additional collectable or numismatic component.
Factors that can affect this include:
year of issue
mintage
design or special issue
condition
independent grade
population at a particular grade
collector demand
availability of comparable examples
This means the value of a graded coin can reflect both its precious-metal content and demand for the individual coin.
It also means investors should understand the premium they are paying above the underlying gold value.
Independently Graded by
NGC and PCGS
Independent grading provides a consistent way of assessing and recording the condition of a coin.
Steadman-Chase works with coins certified by NGC — Numismatic Guaranty Company — and PCGS — Professional Coin Grading Service, two established international coin-grading organisations.
Once graded, the coin is sealed in a tamper-evident holder carrying information identifying the coin and its assigned grade.
This provides independent verification of the coin’s condition and makes it considerably easier for a future buyer to understand exactly what is being offered.
Gold Bullion Value
& Collector Value
One reason we favour selected graded British gold coins is that they can combine two sources of potential value.
The first is straightforward: the gold itself.
If the gold price rises, the intrinsic metal value of the coin rises with it.
The second is the individual coin.
A scarce issue, desirable design or particularly high-grade example may attract a premium from collectors that is distinct from its raw gold value.
That additional premium is not guaranteed to rise and can contract as well as increase. This is why selection and purchase price matter.
We look at the complete coin rather than simply the number printed on its grading certificate.
Direct
Physical Ownership
When you buy a physical gold coin, you own the coin itself.
There are no units in a fund and no synthetic exposure to the gold price.
Each graded coin can be individually identified through its certification details, allowing its authenticity and grading information to be checked against the relevant grading service.
For investors who specifically want tangible assets, that simplicity is an important part of the appeal.
Buying Gold With
Steadman-Chase
Our approach begins with the investor rather than the inventory.
We discuss the amount you are considering allocating, your intended holding period and whether your priority is predominantly precious-metal exposure, graded collectability or a combination of the two.
We can then present suitable coins and explain:
- exactly what the coin is
- its gold content
- its grade and certification
- why that particular issue has been selected
- the premium above its underlying gold value
- relevant tax considerations
- potential resale considerations
You should understand the asset before deciding to acquire it.
Selling Graded
Gold Coins
Gold benefits from an established global market, but the eventual resale value of an individual graded coin is not predetermined.
The gold price at the time of sale matters, as does demand for the particular coin, its grade and the premium buyers are willing to pay.
For that reason, we view high-grade gold coins as a medium- to long-term holding rather than a short-term trading proposition.
An investor should also consider the difference between buying and selling prices before purchasing.
The Risks of
Gold Coin Investment
Physical gold is not risk-free.
Gold prices can fall. Collector premiums can narrow. Demand for a particular issue can change, and a high grade does not guarantee future appreciation.
Investors should therefore consider physical gold as part of a diversified strategy rather than assuming that previous price movements will continue.
What physical gold does offer is something simpler: an identifiable, internationally recognised tangible asset that can be held directly.
