Independent Bottling: A Lucrative Exit Strategy for Cask Owners

Most cask owners think about exit in terms of private resale. The independent bottling market is a less obvious route but, for the right cask, often a better one.

Independent bottlers, Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage, Berry Bros. & Rudd and others, buy casks from across Scotland and bottle them under their own labels. They are constantly looking for quality aged stock to meet demand from their own customer base.

From the seller’s side, the appeal is simplicity. The bottler buys the entire cask at an agreed price per litre of pure alcohol (LPA). There is no need to find dozens of private buyers or to deal with bottling yourself.

The price depends on distillery, age, cask type and quality. Casks aged fifteen years or more from established distilleries can fetch multiples of the original purchase price, particularly when supply of that age category is tight.

Timing matters. Independent bottlers will pay up for stock they actually need, and that need shifts year to year. Selling at the wrong moment leaves money on the table.

We maintain working relationships with several leading independent bottlers and handle these sales on behalf of clients when the numbers make sense.
