The Gold Sovereign: 200 Years of Wealth Preservation

The Sovereign has been struck almost continuously since 1817. It has been used as currency under George III, as a wartime store of value, and now as one of the most widely held investment coins in the world.

Each Sovereign contains 7.32 grams of 22-carat gold. Originally it was money. Today it is held mainly by investors and collectors, partly for the gold content and partly because it is one of the most recognisable coins in existence.

Because modern Sovereigns are UK legal tender, they fall outside Capital Gains Tax. Investment-grade gold is also free of VAT, so the full value of what you pay goes into the asset rather than into duty.

Proof Sovereigns add a numismatic dimension. A proof Sovereign graded PF70 by NGC or PCGS sits well above bullion pricing and has its own market dynamics, driven by collector demand rather than the spot price alone.

The Sovereign also happens to be very practical. It is small, easily authenticated, instantly recognised by dealers worldwide, and has deep secondary-market liquidity, all useful qualities when you eventually come to sell.

We source proof Sovereigns from the Royal Mint with documented provenance, generally at PF69 or PF70, and hold them on behalf of clients building a long-term gold position.
