King Charles III Coronation Coins: A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity
The coronation of King Charles III in May 2023 was a once-in-a-generation event. The Royal Mint marked it with a range of commemorative gold coins that, for collectors, represent something they have not had a chance to buy in seventy years.
The previous British coronation coins were struck in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth II. Over the seven decades since, NGC-graded proof examples of those 1953 coins have appreciated by thousands of percent, a useful piece of historical context for anyone weighing up the new issues.
The 2023 Charles III Coronation proof Sovereigns and Britannias use bespoke designs created for the occasion. NGC PF70 examples, only a small fraction of any mintage qualifies, already trade at premiums of £1,500 to £3,000 above gold content.
The investment case is fairly clean: coronation coins are produced once per monarch. With Charles III’s reign expected to last decades, there will not be another comparable issue for a generation.
Demand is global. Asian and Middle Eastern collectors in particular value British royal commemoratives, and the buying interest has been competitive since release.
We secured an allocation of NGC PF70 Coronation coins at issue. That allocation is now largely placed, but we continue to source from the secondary market for clients who recognise the long-term significance of these coins.
