The Vapour System: How Your Whisky Cask Storage Account Keeps You in Control
One of the most common questions from new cask investors is a practical one: how do you actually keep tabs on a cask once it is in storage? The answer, for most modern bonded warehouses, is a platform called Vapour.
Vapour is the digital cask management system used by HMRC-regulated bonded warehouses. When you buy a cask through Steadman-Chase and it goes into storage, you are issued your own Vapour account. That account is your personal dashboard, a secure, real-time view of what you own.
What you actually see is fairly comprehensive. Every cask you hold is listed with the distillery, distillation date, cask type (bourbon barrel, sherry butt, hogshead, etc.), original litres of alcohol (OLA) and the current regauged volume. Each cask is identified by its unique cask number, tied to your ownership records and the warehouse’s HMRC duty account.
The system also tracks the angel’s share — the natural evaporation that happens as whisky matures in oak. This is usually around 0.5–2% per year and is part of normal maturation. When the warehouse performs a regauge (a physical measurement of the cask’s contents), the updated volume is recorded, so you always have an accurate read on what is in the cask.
Beyond inventory, Vapour holds the documentation: your Certificate of Title, warehouse receipts, insurance paperwork, and delivery orders. If you ever need to prove ownership for a sale, transfer or insurance claim, everything is in one place.
For investors holding multiple casks across different distilleries or warehouses, the platform earns its keep. Rather than juggling separate documents, you have a single consolidated view, which makes planning maturation timelines and exit decisions much easier.
Security is a meaningful part of the system. Vapour accounts are password-protected and tied to verified identities. The warehouse cannot release, move or bottle a cask without a signed instruction from you, and that instruction is logged within the platform, so the chain of custody is intact and auditable.
Transfers also run through Vapour. If you decide to sell, whether privately, through a broker, or back through us, the change of ownership is processed digitally. The new owner receives the cask in their account, and HMRC duty records are updated automatically. There is no physical movement of the cask required for a change of ownership, which keeps the process cheap and clean.
Cask ownership used to mean paper certificates and the occasional update from a warehouse manager. Vapour replaces that with the kind of real-time visibility most investors now expect from any other asset on their balance sheet.
Every cask we source for clients is held in an HMRC-regulated bonded warehouse with full Vapour access. If you would like to see how it works in practice, the team is happy to walk you through it on a call.
