The Britannia Gold Coin: 2025 Performance and Why PF70 Premiums Are Surging

The Britannia is the flagship of British gold coinage, and 2025 was an excellent year for holders. With the gold spot price up around 18 percent and through $2,400 an ounce, even bullion Britannia owners did well. NGC PF70 owners did considerably better.

A standard 1oz gold Britannia tracks the spot price closely. Where it differs from a generic bar is the CGT exemption that comes with UK legal tender status. PF70 proof Britannias add a numismatic premium on top, and that premium has been moving fast.

Through 2025, NGC PF70 proof Britannias from recent years (2020 to 2024) saw their average premium above spot rise from around £400 to over £800. Older proof Britannias, particularly early 2000s issues, now carry premiums of £2,000 to £5,000 above gold content.

The premium expansion is being driven by collector demand outside the traditional UK and US markets. Buyers in China and Singapore have entered the NGC and PCGS graded coin space at scale, competing with established collectors.

Design has also moved on. Modern Britannias carry security features, micro-text, latent images, that put them among the most technically sophisticated coins ever produced.

We focus on NGC PF70 Britannias for clients who want both the gold-price exposure and the numismatic upside. Combined, those two return drivers gave clients holding the coin a total return north of 30 percent last year.
